Martin Luther King Jr. Day Events in Oklahoma City

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the third Monday of every January, and this year, that date is the 16th (Dr. King’s actual birthday is the 15th).  This national holiday is celebrated in a variety of ways.  This year, there are several events going on in Oklahoma City.

The day will start off with a prayer breakfast at 7:00 am.  It will be held at the Reed Conference Center at Rose State College in Midwest City, and there is a cost of $10 per person to cover food.  At 9:00 am, a silent march will begin at the Freedom Center in OKC.  The march, a tribute to the marches done as part of the civil rights movement, will end at the Oklahoma History Center.

Santa is Coming!

Oklahoma City’s Downtown in December events have already begun, even though it’s not quite December yet.  Downtown in December, now in its ninth year, started on November 25th and will run to January 1st.  Many of the events and activities are traditional ones that we’ve seen in years past, but there are a few new things to enjoy.  Even better, since a number of Oklahoma corporations are sponsoring events, some of them are completely free!

The Festival on the Green – 10/15/11

The Myriad Botanical Gardens and its Crystal Bridge is one of Oklahoma City’s most recognized landmarks.  The gardens have, however, been closed for the better part of the year for renovations and additions.  That’s kind of been a good thing—with the construction of the new Devon Tower so close to the gardens traffic in the area has been absolutely horrible, so there’s been no better time to close.  However, the gardens will officially reopen on October 15th with a huge Festival on the Green.  The gardens did actually reopen temporarily for the Festival of the Arts in April, but this celebration marks its return to its normal schedule.

Laser Tag is Making a Come Back

If you are my age, then it is likely you remember when laser tag first came onto the scene.  There were laser tag facilities popping up all over the place, and before long there were tournaments and birthday parties every couple of weeks.  Then the market was flooded with laser tag areas, from the large chains to the mom and pop places, you could find a place to play a game of laser tag almost as easily as you could find pizza.  However, before long this trend slowed, and then it seemed like paintball replaced the laser tag phenomenon and many of the places to play laser tag started to dry up.

Halloween 2011 in OKC

Halloween is coming up!  Many different haunted houses and other spooky events are going on this month.  I’ve covered several of them in previous years (like Haunt the Zoo, FrightFest, and the Haunted Warehouse).  This year, I’d like to highlight a couple of other events in the area.  If you want something a bit different, you might want to take a trip to nearby Lawton for the Trail of Fear or head downtown and take a ghostly “Haunt the River” cruise.

There are Many Things to Enjoy at the State Fair

The Oklahoma State Fair is one of the largest and most interesting events that takes place each fall. There are often so many different things going on at once that it is difficult to know exactly what events are going on at what times. There are so many options that it is good to make sure you know exactly what concerts and entertainment events are going on at any given time so that you can plan your trip to the fair accordingly.

If you have children then you might want to catch the Disney on Ice exhibition that will start on September 15th and run through September 20th. This year the feature is Toy Story 3.

If you love hearing stories or have kids who do, the Arts Council of Oklahoma City has a great treat for you. The 2011 Storytelling Festival is set for September 9 and 10 at the Arts Council campus, which is located in downtown OKC.

Four storytellers will entertain guests with two evening performance and a late-night selection of ghost stories for adults. A kid-friendly matinee version will also be held on Saturday. One really interesting workshop is entitled “Finding Your Own Voice” and will feature all four storytellers. They will create a story together, blending their own voices together to create a truly unique story.

The Paseo Fairy Ball

On Saturday, August 6, the Paseo district will host its annual Fairy Ball. The Fairy Ball includes two hours of live music, dancing, and more, and it’s a great evening for all ages. Children, of course, may get more out of it than others, but it is still a nice way of spending a lazy July evening. The Ball starts at 7:30 pm and ends at 9:30 pm.
