The OKC Blizzard of 2009

December 31st, 2009 · No Comments

Well, the weather certainly brought a surprise for Oklahoma City on Christmas Eve! I woke up early to go visit my grandparents, and what did I find? Blowing, swirling snow. It wasn’t sticking, however, and I thought it would be no problem to drive in. While visibility was certainly bad at times, I left early enough that it wasn’t horrible. After spending several good hours with family, I was ready to head back home and attend another Christmas Eve function.

The Great Ice Storm of 2007

December 29th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Although it might seem like it, no, I haven’t fallen off the face of the planet.  Instead, I’ve been a victim of that rare phenomenon of nature that hits Oklahoma about once every five years: the freak ice storm.  Early on the morning of Monday the 10th it crept in, and before we knew it, OKC was frozen over.

November – naked trees and chilly winds

September 30th, 2007 · No Comments

November is the month of the year that most Oklahomans associate with two things: Christmas decorations that randomly appear the day after Halloween and raking.  Now, most states are going to have a problem with leaves falling and with having to rake their yards; however, they probably have the entire month to deal with this problem.  Maybe even two months if the leaves start to fall in October.

December – hey, where’s my white Christmas?

September 30th, 2007 · No Comments

Many people think of Christmas in December.  In fact, with the retail stores pushing the holiday as hard as they are, it’s often hard to think of anything else after the month of September.  However, the one thing besides Santa Claus that most people associate with Christmas is a rare occurrence in Oklahoma.   In the central and southern parts of the state, a white Christmas is as rare as if we were located in the deep, warm southern part of the US.

October – the heat is really gone!

September 30th, 2007 · No Comments

October is an interesting time of year in Oklahoma to say the least. It is generally one of the more enjoyable months as for three weeks out of the year the temperatures usually hover around seventy-five degrees with light breezes that keep the air circulating. The leaves have just started thinking about changing colors, and the kids are out in their yards playing now that the oppressive heat that has plagued us since May is gone. This change in the weather combined with the approaching holiday season usually makes October a very fun and interactive month when people seem to be more inclined to get out and become active in each other’s lives.

September – time for the fair!

September 27th, 2007 · No Comments

September means one thing in Oklahoma: it’s time for the state fair!  The fair always brings with it tons of fun.  The fairground buildings play host to a variety of interesting things, including international exhibits, vender booths, and the popular Made in Oklahoma building, where fair goers can sample locally produced food and learn about many of the unique items made right here in the state.

May – “Don’t worry, it’s just the tornado siren again”

September 27th, 2007 · No Comments

May in Oklahoma means one thing: tornadoes!  It’s the state’s most famous weather phenomenon, and not a May goes by that we don’t see Gary England on TV telling people to take cover, stay off the streets, and get out of your mobile homes.  He’s become so famous for his tornado reporting that he even does an educational show at local schools called “Those Terrible Twisters.”  With a title like that, is it any wonder that Oklahoma was the primary location for the filming of the movie Twister?

April – month of showers

September 27th, 2007 · No Comments

When April comes around in Oklahoma, it means the cold is finally over.  Now, we get the rain.  Usually, the tornadoes hold off another month, but April often involves thunderstorms and down pours.  These April showers will bring May flowers, but they also bring flooded roads.  Fortunately, the really rainy Aprils are far and few between, and most years the rain is enough to make the entire city flourish as trees, flowers, and grass turns a bright green.

June – summertime in OKC

September 27th, 2007 · No Comments

Well, June is yet another of our bipolar months.  While March can’t make up its mind between being warm and being freezing, June can’t decide between being a normal month and being a crazy one.  Some years, there’s not a drop of rain to be found for the entire month.  During these times, yards go from soft, vibrant greens to crunch browns and farmers go from nice, jovial guys to cranky, stressed out people who are forced to watch entire fields slowly wither away in the glaring heat.

March – the bipolar month

September 27th, 2007 · No Comments

You never know what you’re going to get with March in Oklahoma.  The weather truly is bipolar.  One day, it will be in the 70s and everyone will be breaking out the shorts and short sleeved shirts.  The next day (or, at times, later that afternoon), the weather will drop to the low 40s and people will be scurrying back inside for pants and jackets.  There are days when the temperature ping pongs back and forth so many times you don’t know what to wear.
