Only in OKC – Will Rogers Park

Will Rogers Park in Oklahoma City is one of the most beautiful parks I’ve ever seen.  In fact, some people have referred to it as OKC’s own Eden.  It certainly could be mistaken for a paradise, especially in the spring and summer months when all of the flowers are in bloom.

Will Rogers Park isn’t one of those parks located out on the edge of the city.  Instead, it’s right off Portland Avenue.  However, the way the park was designed makes it seem like it’s not at all in the middle of the city.  Once you get into this good-sized area, you won’t even be able to see the streets or really hear all that much of the traffic.  It’s a great place to escape from the daily grind because of this.

Oklahoma City has a nice number of parks and other outdoor areas where you can take your children to play, take a nice picnic for lunch, or just sit outdoors and relax.  No matter which activity you’d like to do, there’s a park in OKC that’s just perfect for you.  Here’s a list of some of the major parks in the city.  At the moment, I’m just listing the major parks, but I’ll soon add many of the smaller ones to this list.

Oklahoma City is home to many great places to eat, some of which you won’t find anywhere else.  Since I love to eat, I thought I would share some of my favorite places to grab lunch or have a nice dinner while you’re in Oklahoma City.  As I have time (i.e., use this list as an excuse to eat out), I’ll write more in-depth articles about each place to eat so you can really get an idea of where you want to have your meals.

Plaza Theatre Reopens

It’s sat empty for years, but now, after a year-long renovation, the Plaza Theatre will open its doors to theater-goers once more.  Located onNorthwest 16th street, the Plaza Theatre’s first even will be on December 7th and will feature “Forever Plaid,” a four man quartet.

What’s more, the Plaza Theatre will now be the home for Oklahoma’s professional music theatre company, Lyric Theatre.  Lyric is known throughout the state as one of the best companies to perform for, and their performances are incredibly good.  While Lyric has held its performances in a number of venues, including the huge Civic Center Music Hall, having the Plaza Theatre as their home will allow the company to expand and put on year-round shows.

Only in OKC – Restaurants you won’t find elsewhere

Like any city, Oklahoma City has its share of little cafes and hidden little restaurants that all of the locals know about, but if you’re visiting from out of town, chances are you’ll pass right by these places.  Even some residents of the city don’t know about all of them and are pleasantly surprised whenever they learn of a new place to eat.

Let’s start big and work our way down.  If you’re not from the Midwest, you’ve probably never heard of Braum’s.  It’s a chain of restaurants that operates in six states, including Oklahoma.  In fact, the main plant is here, and if you’re interested in driving a bit (it’s located near a small town called Tuttle), you can actually take a free tour.

Christmas Events – Get Your Tickets Early!

It’s already happening – Christmas trees and Santa have appeared at Wal-Mart!  I spotted a small amount of Christmas decorations lurking in a back aisle around the first of the month, but on Halloween, I walked into my local super center to be greeted by a huge tree covered with twinkling lights.  Christmas has come to Oklahoma City already, leaving poor Thanksgiving with barely any attention at all.
