The Elephants Return!

On June 12, 2008, the Oklahoma City Zoo’s elephants, Asha and Chandra, started their two and a half year “date” with Sneezy, the elephant who lives at the Tulsa Zoo.  But there as more than just an attempt to have the elephants mate (although that was successful—Asha is pregnant!).  During the time Asha and Chandra have been gone, the Oklahoma City Zoo was renovated and redesigned the elephant habitat, and now it’s ready to be opened.

Oklahoma City University Creative Writing Festival

Writing conferences can be expensive, and some of the ones I’ve attended have certainly not been worth the money.  However, that’s not the case with the Oklahoma City University Creative Writing Festival.   The festival is completely free to everyone, which is great if you’re in OKC and enjoy writing.  It will be held on April 16, 2011.

What does the festival focus on?  According to the director, Dr. Danita Berg, this year’s festival will have guest speakers discussing both how to write and the business of writing and publishing.  To that end, two of the guest speakers are publishers.  Dorothy Alexander of Village Books Press and Jeanetta Calhoun Mish of Mongrel Empire Press will be talking about how they select what books to publish.

New Law Would Make Texting While Driving Illegal

If you’re texting in Oklahoma while driving and get pulled over, you could suddenly find yourself slapped with an extra $500 fine!  That’s what the Oklahoma Senate Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security wants.  They recently approved a bill that would give police the authority to fine motorists for texting if they are pulled over for some other reason.  The bill passed the committee with a six to two vote, and now it goes to the full Senate.  A similar bill is also in debate in the House.  Currently, it is only illegal for drivers under 18 who only have a learner’s permit to text while driving.

In the Mood to Try Something New and A Little Different? Try RePUBlic Gastropub

Every now and then I go to a place not sure of what to expect, and I am more than a little surprised.  My experience with RePUBlic Gastropub was like this.  My friends and I went to the restaurant and one of the first things that I noticed was how busy it was.  We met on a Friday night, but we were able to get there relatively early (before 7:00), and it was still more than an hour wait before we were able to get a table.

Oklahoma Governor Misspoke?

When she was inaugurated in January, Governor Mary Fallin became Oklahoma’s first female governor.  This marked a turning point in Oklahoma politics in many ways, but just as her win brought out a number of detractors, so did her inauguration.  Many are now claiming that Fallin did not repeat the oath of office correctly.  Instead of swearing to “support, obey, and defend” the Constitution, they claim she actually said “support, obey, and offend.”

Valentine’s Day in OKC

Every year, there are different events and specials in Oklahoma City for Valentine’s Day.  This special romantic day is a great day for celebration, so take your significant other out and show him or her an awesome time (and then go home and snuggle!).  Here are some great V-Day events happening this year.

If your significant other is a big fan of the OKC Thunder sports team, send them a personalized Valentine’s Day message and gifts delivered by the Thunder mascot Rumble the Bison.  He will make his deliveries from February 11 to the 14.  In addition to the gift basket you select, Rumble will take a picture with the recipient and sign autographs.

February Events in OKC

With our weather yo-yoing like crazy (almost 70 one day, then down to 15 a few days later!), it’s hard to say what February 2011 will bring Oklahoma City.  If it’s nice, there are many different events to attend.  If it’s snowing and the roads are icy, you may find that you can’t check out as many of these activities as you’d like.  Personally, I’m hoping the ice and snow stay away!

2/1 – 5th Street Jazz Collecting at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) Jazz Lab
2/1 – Always…Patsy Cline at the Lyric Plaza Theatre
2/1 – Indian Ponies exhibit at the Red Earth Museum
2/1 – Visions of Reality exhibit at the OK Heritage Museum
