Give Back This Holiday Season

As the holiday season begins here in Oklahoma City, I’d like to take a short minute to remind everyone that the season isn’t just about buying gifts, eating a lot of food, and spending time with friends and family.  The holiday season is also about giving back and about remembering and helping those less fortunate.  OKC, like all major cities, has its share of homeless, jobless, and those who have fallen on hard times.

During the holidays, there are a number of things you can do to help out these people.  Making a donation of clothing to the Oklahoma City Salvation Army or Goodwill is one way.  You can also donate directly to the Salvation Army around the holidays by giving any spare change you have to their bell ringers.  These volunteers will appear around the malls and major stores around Thanksgiving, and they appreciate any extra money you may have to give.  Even a few dollars helps.

You can also volunteer or donate money or food to the various soup kitchens and homeless shelters around the Oklahoma City metro.  These include the City Rescue Mission and the Homeless Alliance.  Both work to not only provide shelter and food to those in need but also work to provide them with opportunities to change their situation.  Some of these shelters are affiliated with a specific church or other group, but some are stand-alone shelters and soup kitchens that truly need all the help they can get.

Some blog resources about the homeless in OKC:

The RezoneOKC blog discusses the homeless situation and downtown OKC.

DaJobSucks blog has a list of homeless shelters in OKC.

The OKPolicy Blog speaks about the rise in the unemployed and the homeless.
