Downtown in December

Looking for something to do this December while you’re in Oklahoma City?  I already mentioned the free trolley and boat rides earlier, but they’re just a small part of the overall Downtown in December event that’s coming to the Bricktown area.

No holiday celebration would be complete without a huge tree decorated with bright lights, so that’s where you should start your downtown OKC adventure.  The SandRidge Christmas Tree is located north of Kerr Park, and it’s huge.  Head over to the Myriad Botanical Gardens after checking out the tree and spend some time strolling through the magical wonderland they’ve created.  There are enough lights to make it easy to see at night while not so many that it’s blinding.

The traditional Devon Ice Skating Rink is back this year, of course.  You can rent skates or bring your own, and you can even reserve the entire rink for a private party.  If you find it difficult to balance on those thin blades (I do!), head over to the Chesapeake Snow Tube.  This ride sends you speeding down the largest manmade snow tubing slope in the country.  For only $10, you can go as many times as you want for the next hour and a half.

The Oklahoma City museums are celebrating Downtown in December with free Sunday admission.  The OKC Memorial, the American Banjo Museum, the Pickens Oklahoma Heritage Museum, and the Museum of Art will each offer free admission on one Sunday a month, and then all four will be open for free on December 27.

Of course, if it’s Christmas, there has to be Santa.  But Santa’s gone high-tech this year.  He’s ditched the sleigh and reindeer for a Segway!  The Sonic Segway Santa will be zooming around Bricktown all month, and he’s got some treats to hand out to all the good boys and girls (and bloggers, I hope).

It sounds like it’s going to be a great time to be in Oklahoma City in December.  If you’ve got nothing else to do, come down and join us for all kinds of great holiday excitement.  You can find out all the details about each event at

The Prairie State Runner’s Blog talks about the SandRidge Santa Run, a fun event being held in conjunction with Downtown in December.

The Oklahoma City Ballet Blog discusses how the Oklahoma City Ballet is involved in the festivities, plus it outlines the schedule for their annual holiday show, The Nutcracker.  If you’ve never seen the show, take the time to do so—it’s outstanding.
