What, a post about New Year’s Eve already? If you’re like me, your thoughts haven’t made it past next week, let alone past the holidays. However, it’s never too early to make your New Year’s plans, especially if those plans are going to include attending Opening Night 2010, Oklahoma City’s huge celebration. Every year, thousands of people pour into Bricktown for food, fun, live performances, and, of course, to see that giant ball drop at midnight. That’s not an exaggeration, either—attendance at last year’s event was over 70,000!
This year’s event will center around Kerr Park, the site of many of the live performances. You’ll hear music by PowerHouz, Edgar Cruz, Boru’s Ghosts, The Non, and the Floyd Hanes Orchestra, just to name a few. The OKC Roller Derby girls will be on hand to demonstrate their sport, and the Desert Fire belly dancers are also scheduled to put in an appearance.
Of course, children are welcome at Opening Night. The special kid’s section of the event includes face painting, an obstacle courts, several different hands-on art projects, and more. Your kids will have a blast hanging out with their friends and then counting down to the new year.
Al you need to get in to all the participating venues is an Opening Night wristband. You can purchase these in advance for $8 from any Homeland, MidFirst Bank, 7-Eleven, or Mathis Brothers. You can also buy one at Opening Night for $10. Children under 5 are free. Find out more at www.artscouncilokc.com. You may also want to re-read my post from Opening Night 2008, especially when it comes to finding a place to eat and parking (it’s a nightmare—expect to walk!).

Brandy McDonnell has last year’s schedule on her blog. While it’s not current, it will give you an idea of the structure of Opening Night.
