The New Children’s Zoo at The Oklahoma City Zoo

The Oklahoma City Zoo has built a number of new additions recently, with the newest one being the Children’s Zoo.  The idea behind this 2.5 acre addition was to give children a place where they can learn, explore, and even touch animals and animal habitats.  The exhibit just opened in March, and if you’re planning a trip to the zoo with children, you simply can’t pass it by.  Here are a few of the Children’s Zoo’s highlights.

When you approach the Children’ s Zoo, you’ll see two different entrances: one is kid sized, while the other is for adults.  Various birds are featured in this area.  Then there’s the Waterway, an almost relaxing area featuring a waterfall, a koi pond, and plenty of bright pink flamingos.  Another place to relax for a few minutes while exploring the Children’s Zoo is Grandma’s Porch.  This shady area overlooks a beautiful meadow and features educational programs for the kids while the adults take a break.

For those who want to touch and interact with animals, a trip to the Barnyard is in order.  Kids can play with many different animals and learn about how to raise them.  The Underground area, on the other hand, teaches kids about various creatures like spiders, roaches, and other insects.  Finally, there’s the monkey area that’s home to some new arrivals to the OKC Zoo: the spider monkeys and squirrel monkeys!  Kids are sure to get a laugh at their antics.

The OKC Zoo is a great place for the entire family to visit.  I know it’s one of my favorite places to go during the summer.  Even though I’ve been to the zoo a dozen times or more, it seems like I always find something new and different with each visit.  I’m looking forward to taking a trip through the Children’s Zoo…I guess I’m still a kid at heart!
