Avatar and the Culture of Language Seminar

One of my favorite movies to come out in recent years was Avatar, James Cameron’s amazing CGI film about soldiers interacting with the alien Na’vi.  These blue aliens lived among the forests of a planet far away from Earth, and they spoke their own interesting language.

If you love Avatar as much as I do, you’ll be very interested to know that Dr. Paul Frommer, the creator of the Na’vi alien language, is going to be in Oklahoma on October 7.  He will discuss how he developed the Na’vi language, how it works, and talk about training the actors to speak it.  For linguist students and those interested in language, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Dr. Frommer’s seminar is a part of the Oklahoma Conversation of the Humanities program, a program sponsored by the Oklahoma Humanities Council.  He won’t be in Oklahoma City, though—you’ll have to take a short little trip to Tulsa.  However, I thought it was certainly worth sharing with all of you since it’s such a cool opportunity.

It will be held at the Philbrook Museum of Art at 7:00 p.m, and is completely free to everyone.

To learn more about Dr. Frommer’s visit, go to www.okhumanitiescouncil.org or call (405) 235-0280.

Dr. Frommer’s blog, http://naviteri.org, includes some of his thoughts on the language and some audio clips of the language being spoken.

The Official Avatar Community Blog talks about the language.

The Philadelphia City Paper blog breaks down the Na’vi language.

The Accredited Language Blog talks about different artificial languages, including Na’vi.
