Carolyn Forché to Speak in OKC

Carolyn Forché is a poet, human rights advocate, and translator.  Now the “poet of witness” comes to Oklahoma City to discuss her writing and life on April 13, 2011.  She will be in OKC as part of the Oklahoma City University Thatcher Hoffman Smith Poetry Series.

Forché has been fascinated by struggle, especially an individual’s struggle against upheaval and turmoil.  She’s traveled the world researching, witnessing, and writing about people’s challenges.  In El Salvador, for example, she worked with human rights activist Archbishop Oscar Romero, a man who was later assassinated.  She later worked with Amnesty International in finding people who had gone into hiding due to political upheaval.  The chronicled her time in Central America in her book of poetry titled The Country Between Us.  She followed this with several other volumes of poetry and translations of others’ works.

On April 13, writers, lovers of poetry, and those fascinated by Miss Forché are invited to join the poet at a workshop and poetry reading.  The workshop will be held at 10:00 am and will include a reading, discussion of writing, and a Q&A session.  A open mic poetry reading will be held later that evening at 6:15, followed by a poetry reading at 8:00 by Forché.  All events will be held at the Kerr McGee Auditorium on the OCU campus.  All events are free to the public.

The growing writing community of Oklahoma City has brought more and more writers to speak here in the past decade or so, and the trend is continuing.  Miss Forché will be the 13th poet to take part in this poetry series, following names like Billy Collins, Ted Kooser, Mark Doty, and Charles Simic.  I enjoy literary events like this, especially when they’re offered to members of the community for free.  If you enjoy poetry, whether you write it or just like reading it, you should definitely make plans to attend Miss Forché’s reading.
