El Reno Fried Onion Burger Day

Oklahoma is known for some odd things, including cooking the world’s largest fried onion hamburger once a year.  This event takes place in El Reno, which is just a short drive from the heart of Oklahoma City.  It’s held the first Saturday of May, which is May 7th this year (also the day before Mother’s Day—hey, why not take mom to see a big burger?).

The festival takes place in downtown El Reno, and many of the streets are closed off for different booths.  Crafts, jewelry, artwork, and many other things are for sale, plus there’s a lot of great food.  Hamburgers, especially burgers topped with fried onions, are the main meal of the day, but there are many other options if you’re not a burger eater.  Around noon, everyone gathers around the giant grill to watch the cutting of the giant fried onion burger.

The giant burger is cooked on a grill that’s ten feet wide!  The giant burger itself weighs over 750 pounds, and flipping it takes a team of professionals.  Those close enough to the grill can toss onions, pickles, and other toppings onto the burger.  After it’s cooked, the burger is sliced, put on buns, and passed out to those who want a taste.

In addition to the big burger, two stages provide live entertainment.  The El Reno jazz band a various local artists will be performing on the main stage.  The kid’s stage features a mixed martial arts demonstration, dancing, Sponji the Clown, and more.  There’s also a classic car show for those who love them.

Admission to Fried Onion Burger Day is free, as are most of the events.  There are some rides and games that cost, of course.  The festivities kick off at 10:00 am and end around 5:00 pm.
