Lynda’s Birkenstock

There are a lot of small, local businesses and stores in Oklahoma City, just like in many areas. The difference is that not all of them are in easy to find locations. While the downtown and Bricktown areas do have a number of great little stores, they aren’t the only place to look for local shopping and great deals. One of the shops that’s a bit difficult to just stumble upon is Lynda’s Birkenstock.

Lynda’s is located on the corner of NW 36th street and Youngs Boulevard, a location you’re not likely to just drive by unless you’re in the neighborhood for something. It’s mostly a residential area, but there are a few little shops clustered together at this intersection. Lynda’s has been there since 1982. It originally began as a consignment store, but Lynda Simon decided to use the store to bring the Birkenstock shoe to OKC.

Birkenstocks, if you’ve never heard of them, are a German designed shoe created by Konrad Birkenstock in 1897. The shoe was designed to offer comfort for those who were on their feet all day. Using top quality materials, Birkenstock created a shoe with a contoured cork footbed that conformed to the shape of the foot. Lynda Simon, as a hair stylist, was on her feet a lot, and eventually the foot pain drove her to searching for better shoes. That’s when she learned about Birkenstocks.

However, finding Birkenstocks in Oklahoma was not very easy. When she finally got a pair, Lynda loved them so much she decided to open a Birkenstock store. She purchased the space at 36th and Youngs and turned it into her own Birkenstock store.

When she first opened her store, some people wondered if Lynda was crazy. Birkenstocks sell very well in Germany, where many use the sandals as house shoes, but outside of Europe, the brand wasn’t very well known at the time. However, once the word got out, Lynda’s started seeing a lot of business. Waitresses, cashiers, sales clerks, and many others who spend a great amount of time standing were soon trying out the comfortable shoe and loving it.

Lynda still owns and operates the store, and her daughter Jill has joined her. If you’re in need of some great shoes, check out the store. Your feet may thank you!
