The Festival on the Green – 10/15/11

The Myriad Botanical Gardens and its Crystal Bridge is one of Oklahoma City’s most recognized landmarks.  The gardens have, however, been closed for the better part of the year for renovations and additions.  That’s kind of been a good thing—with the construction of the new Devon Tower so close to the gardens traffic in the area has been absolutely horrible, so there’s been no better time to close.  However, the gardens will officially reopen on October 15th with a huge Festival on the Green.  The gardens did actually reopen temporarily for the Festival of the Arts in April, but this celebration marks its return to its normal schedule.

This event will feature performers, arts, a farmer’s market, games, activities for the kids, and, naturally, guided tours of the grounds and the Crystal Bridge.  Even better, the admission fee to the bridge will be waved for the event, so it’s the perfect time to go see the tropical wonderland.  Country music star Pat Green will be performing a free concert later that evening, so be sure to stick around.  The Festival on the Green begins at 10:00 am on October 15th with a dedication ceremony.

A few weeks after it reopens, the Crystal Bridge will host its annual Halloween event, the Creepy Conservatory.  Kids of all ages can dress up, enjoy a few Halloween treats, and learn about some of nature’s creepiest critters.  The event will take place on October 27 from 1:00 to 4:00.

Other blogs about the Myriad Gardens:

Alonzo Adams has some images of the renovated western section of the gardens (the part that was open during the Festival of the Arts in April).

Brandy McDonnell has a blog post about the Festival of the Arts that includes information on the renovations.

Doug Dawgz has a huge post about the history of the gardens and the bridge.  Some of his photos are amazing.

Adam Knapp talks about some of the problems with the proposed restaurant addition to the gardens.  It appears the restaurant will not open with the rest of the gardens.
