The Myriad Gardens

The Myriad Gardens is one of the most well-known areas in Oklahoma City.  In fact, the Crystal Bridge is often included in official pictures of Oklahoma City, especially the downtown area.  Located in the heart of the city, the gardens are host to a variety of events throughout the year, plus they make a great place for people to take a picnic, spend a Sunday afternoon, or just escape from the world on their lunch break.

A shot of downtown from the gardens.  Note the Crystal Bridge on the right.

The gardens are more than just a collection of flowers, though.  In fact, while the Myriad Gardens are very park-like, I never think of it as a park.  For one thing, the gardens are surrounded by many offices and parking lots, so it’s almost like a little Eden in the middle of a concrete jungle.  There are also not that many plants in some areas, making it look very open and grassy.  On nice days, you’ll often see people flying their kites in this section of the gardens.

Moving a bit inward, you find a sunken area.  This is where you’ll find little trails leading around the ponds and streams of the gardens.  These paths are lined with raised flowerbeds and planters, and in the spring and summer months, they’re full of colorful flowers and plants.  If you want some solitude, this is the place to go.  Benches and other places to sit are positioned so that you can sit and read or eat lunch while enjoying the view of the fountains and flowers.

In addition to walking around the gardens, you can also tour the Crystal Bridge Botanical Gardens.  The bridge is essentially a huge greenhouse, and it includes plants of just about every type, color, and size.  Garden attendants are available to answer questions or give you more information about specific plants, but you are also free to roam the Crystal Bridge as you please.  After leaving, a gift shop has a number of different mementos and items for purchase.

The Myriad Gardens hosts a good number of events each year.  One of the biggest is the Arts Festival in April.  During this time, you’ll not only find great paintings and other arts for sell, you’ll find a number of really neat sculptures and lawn art scattered around the gardens.  You can buy most of this art if you have the money (some is a bit pricy), but it’s also fun to walk around and see it all.  Some of it is really unique and different.

The gardens have a number of stages used for live music, too.  One of this is the water a stage, a round platform that is mostly surrounded by water.  It’s located under the Crystal Bridge (yes, you can actually walk under a part of the bridge).  While I’ve seen a number of performances at the water stage, I will always remember it as the site of one of my best friend’s wedding.  You can actually rent parts of the garden for events, and a lot of people hold their outdoor weddings here.

I have to say that her wedding was very nice.  Having the gardens and the water in the background made a great backdrop for photos, plus the entire feel of the wedding was very open and informal.  The price to rent the stage was very reasonable (I’ve included pricing below), so if you’re looking for a great place to hold an outdoor wedding, definitely take a look at the Myriad Gardens.  There are several outdoor areas available, and you can even rent the entire Crystal Bridge if you like!

Admission to the Crystal Bridge is $6.00 for adults and $5.00 for children and seniors.  It’s open from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm Monday through Saturday (the bridge opens at noon on Sundays).  Rental prices range from $200 for outdoor areas to $1,000 for the Crystal Bridge itself.  For more information on the Crystal Bridge and the Myriad Gardens, visit

If you’re looking to kill a few hours or just spend some fun time outdoors, you won’t find a better place to do it than the Myriad Gardens.  They’re one of Oklahoma City’s prides, and you won’t want to miss out on seeing them.
