Paseo Arts Festival – May 24, 25, and 26

Looking for something to do on Memorial Day weekend besides go to the lake or cook out?  How about heading over to the Paseo Arts District to attend the 32nd annual Paseo Arts Festival?  Yes, I know the Festival of the Arts was just a few weeks ago (the last full week of April, in fact), but the Paseo Arts Festival has a very different feel to it, and there are a lot of different types of artwork available.

Staring on Saturday the 24th and running through Monday the 26th, the Paseo Arts Festival takes up much of Northwest 28th through 30th streets.  Besides the art, visitors will be treated to live music and entertainment on two different stages.

Of course, the main attraction is the art.  Over 70 artists will have their work on display.  You’ll find paintings, jewelry, sculptures, pottery, wood working, and much more for sale.  While you find many of the same type of art available at the Festival of the Arts, the Paseo Arts Festival tends to feature more local artists and artists who aren’t as well known.  The whole festival has a more local atmosphere to it.

The festival has several activities aimed at children.  They can create collage puppets out of a variety of materials, participate in some of the entertainment, and more.  This is a great way to get kids into artwork and making art.

One local artist is always selected as the featured artist, and for 2008, that artist is Jack Hill.  Mr. Hill passed away in January, but his life and his artwork will be celebrated at the festival this year.  In addition to all of his fine work, Mr. Hill was responsible for creating the Paseo Arts Festival’s official image, and visitors can purchase prints of this image at the festival.

In addition to all the great art available, the festival takes place in the heart of Oklahoma’s art district, which means you’ll be able to visit a number of different art galleries, shops, and restaurants during the weekend.

The Paseo Arts Festival is one of my favorite events, and I’ve always had a great time looking at the artwork.  If you’ll be in town that weekend, if you love art, or if you just want to have a day outside, head over to the Paseo district.  Just watch out—you might end up going home with several paintings.
