The Disney Magic Comes to Oklahoma

Do you love Disney?  If you’re like me, some of your earliest childhood memories include watching Winnie the Pooh, Snow White, and Dumbo.  If you’ve got kids, you’ve probably introduced them to Belle, Mulan, and, of course, Mickey Mouse.  Disney fans of all ages will love the Disney exhibit currently being displayed at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art.

Entitled “A Century of Magic: The Animation of the Walt Disney Studios,” this exhibit is made up of over 80 animation cels.  The cels come from the private collection of Janis and Domer “Jay” Scaramucci.  It opened March 3 and will be on display through September 16.

Great Ways to Save in Oklahoma City with the Keep it Local Card

If you are like me, then you probably like to go and explore the city and all that it has to offer as frequently as you can.  I have found that I am particularly fond of finding things that are local and are distinctively Oklahoman.  Because of this I was very excited to find out about the Keep it Local card.  I hadn’t read anything about it or seen any advertisements, but rather I noticed this stack of cards sitting on the countertop of my local coffee house.  So, I was excited to learn that this card offered a wide variety of discounts at local merchants that I would frequent anyway.  Plus, the ten dollars that I spent on the card was going to be used to help boost the local economy, which is something that appealed to me greatly.

New Bill Would Make OK Law Immune to the Supreme Court

Every now and then, I have to take a break from talking about the great restaurants and fun events of Oklahoma City and talk about some of the interesting, crazy, or just plain weird things our legislature is doing.  I recently learned about a new bill introduced in the Oklahoma state Senate that fits all three categories.

State Senator Ralph Shortey of Oklahoma City recently introduced Senate Joint Resolution 84, a bill that would amend Oklahoma’s state constitution.  This amendment would prevent the United States Supreme Court from reviewing the constitutionality of any Oklahoma law.  Basically, it would remove any federal oversight of Oklahoma laws.

Oklahoma City is Home to the First Matthew Kenney Academy

We’ve got a number of unique things in Oklahoma City, and we’ve recently added one more: the first licensed Raw and Living Foods educational center in the world!  The Matthew Kenney Academy, which was formerly called 105degrees, provides future chefs with the skills they need to produce amazing meals featuring only raw and living foods.  The academy is the brainchild of chef Matthew Kenney and OKC resident Dara Prentice. It’s connected to the Matthew Kenney restaurant.

The academy’s curriculum focuses on using organic, whole, and unprocessed foods to create an amazing meal that is healthy and flavorful.  The academy was previously named 105 degrees because that’s the temperature food must be keep under in order for it to keep its natural enzymes.

There are Many Things to Enjoy at the State Fair

The Oklahoma State Fair is one of the largest and most interesting events that takes place each fall. There are often so many different things going on at once that it is difficult to know exactly what events are going on at what times. There are so many options that it is good to make sure you know exactly what concerts and entertainment events are going on at any given time so that you can plan your trip to the fair accordingly.

If you have children then you might want to catch the Disney on Ice exhibition that will start on September 15th and run through September 20th. This year the feature is Toy Story 3.

Lynda’s Birkenstock

There are a lot of small, local businesses and stores in Oklahoma City, just like in many areas. The difference is that not all of them are in easy to find locations. While the downtown and Bricktown areas do have a number of great little stores, they aren’t the only place to look for local shopping and great deals. One of the shops that’s a bit difficult to just stumble upon is Lynda’s Birkenstock.
