Laser Tag is Making a Come Back

If you are my age, then it is likely you remember when laser tag first came onto the scene.  There were laser tag facilities popping up all over the place, and before long there were tournaments and birthday parties every couple of weeks.  Then the market was flooded with laser tag areas, from the large chains to the mom and pop places, you could find a place to play a game of laser tag almost as easily as you could find pizza.  However, before long this trend slowed, and then it seemed like paintball replaced the laser tag phenomenon and many of the places to play laser tag started to dry up.

There are Many Things to Enjoy at the State Fair

The Oklahoma State Fair is one of the largest and most interesting events that takes place each fall. There are often so many different things going on at once that it is difficult to know exactly what events are going on at what times. There are so many options that it is good to make sure you know exactly what concerts and entertainment events are going on at any given time so that you can plan your trip to the fair accordingly.

If you have children then you might want to catch the Disney on Ice exhibition that will start on September 15th and run through September 20th. This year the feature is Toy Story 3.

Carolyn Forché to Speak in OKC

Carolyn Forché is a poet, human rights advocate, and translator.  Now the “poet of witness” comes to Oklahoma City to discuss her writing and life on April 13, 2011.  She will be in OKC as part of the Oklahoma City University Thatcher Hoffman Smith Poetry Series.

Forché has been fascinated by struggle, especially an individual’s struggle against upheaval and turmoil.  She’s traveled the world researching, witnessing, and writing about people’s challenges.  In El Salvador, for example, she worked with human rights activist Archbishop Oscar Romero, a man who was later assassinated.  She later worked with Amnesty International in finding people who had gone into hiding due to political upheaval.  The chronicled her time in Central America in her book of poetry titled The Country Between Us.  She followed this with several other volumes of poetry and translations of others’ works.

Making History in Oklahoma

On November 2, 2010, Oklahomans will make history.  How?  We will elect the state’s very first female governor.  The headline election is between Representative Mary Fallin (Republican) and Lt. Governor Jari Askins (Democrat).  Both women bring experience and knowledge to the position, and I’ve been impressed by both in the debates.  Fallin brings to the table her experience as both a member of Congress since 2006 and as a former Lt. Governor, while Askins has severed as Lt. Governor since 2007 and has experience as a judge and as a member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

Looking for a Unique Halloween Experience? Try the Bricktown Haunted Warehouse

In the warehouse district there are many old buildings that loom over the streets, but for the last twenty-six years the Bricktown Haunted Warehouse has been an attraction that has taken the scary aspects of one of these buildings and turned it into a three story haunting free for all.  In fact some claim that the start of the recent revival in that area began with the opening of the first season of the haunted warehouse back in 1984.

The State Fair Returns

September means a lot of things to many different people, but to Oklahomans, it means it’s time for the state fair!  The Great State Fair of Oklahoma, as it is officially called, opens September 16th and runs through the 26th.  The fair always promises a fun time for everyone.  I know I always enjoy the atmosphere, seeing all the different exhibits, and (my absolute favorite part) eating all that amazing fair food!

Give Back This Holiday Season

As the holiday season begins here in Oklahoma City, I’d like to take a short minute to remind everyone that the season isn’t just about buying gifts, eating a lot of food, and spending time with friends and family.  The holiday season is also about giving back and about remembering and helping those less fortunate.  OKC, like all major cities, has its share of homeless, jobless, and those who have fallen on hard times.
