Are you looking for some good movies?  Sure, you could go to one of Oklahoma City’s many movie theaters—Harkins, TinselTown, The Warren—but you might be looking for something other than a popcorn flick.  Oklahoma has a number of film festivals and movie series, and many of them cost much less than going to a theater.  Here are a few different movie series and festivals going on this spring.  Check them out.  Many include great movies that are not only entertaining but also very educational.

Great Ways to Save in Oklahoma City with the Keep it Local Card

If you are like me, then you probably like to go and explore the city and all that it has to offer as frequently as you can.  I have found that I am particularly fond of finding things that are local and are distinctively Oklahoman.  Because of this I was very excited to find out about the Keep it Local card.  I hadn’t read anything about it or seen any advertisements, but rather I noticed this stack of cards sitting on the countertop of my local coffee house.  So, I was excited to learn that this card offered a wide variety of discounts at local merchants that I would frequent anyway.  Plus, the ten dollars that I spent on the card was going to be used to help boost the local economy, which is something that appealed to me greatly.

In the Mood to Try Something New and A Little Different? Try RePUBlic Gastropub

Every now and then I go to a place not sure of what to expect, and I am more than a little surprised.  My experience with RePUBlic Gastropub was like this.  My friends and I went to the restaurant and one of the first things that I noticed was how busy it was.  We met on a Friday night, but we were able to get there relatively early (before 7:00), and it was still more than an hour wait before we were able to get a table.

Oklahoma Home and Garden Show

The Oklahoma Home and Garden Show is scheduled for January 21-23 this year.  This is one of the first major events in Oklahoma in 2011.  It might sound odd that there’s a garden show in the middle of winter, but the Home and Garden Show is one of the biggest draws this time of year.  I’ve been to the show a few times in the past, and I’ve always been impressed.  If you’re looking for a place to learn about turning your home or garden into something amazing, this is the place.  There are more than 400 exhibitors and home/garden experts at the show, and they are all ready to help you learn what you need to create all those home projects you’ve been planning.

FrightFest at Frontier City is Here!

If you are looking for a good family Halloween scare, then you will definitely want to look into the FrightFest celebration at Frontier City.   It has been at least five years since I’d decided to venture to the popular Oklahoma tourist destination during their October celebration of all things haunted, but I thought that this year might be a good time to stop in and see what (if anything) had changed.

The New Children’s Zoo at The Oklahoma City Zoo

The Oklahoma City Zoo has built a number of new additions recently, with the newest one being the Children’s Zoo.  The idea behind this 2.5 acre addition was to give children a place where they can learn, explore, and even touch animals and animal habitats.  The exhibit just opened in March, and if you’re planning a trip to the zoo with children, you simply can’t pass it by.  Here are a few of the Children’s Zoo’s highlights.

Science Museum Oklahoma

If you grew up in Oklahoma, chances are you went on a field trip to the Omniplex at least once, if not three or four times during grade school.  Today, the name has changed—it’s now the Science Museum Oklahoma, a name that, frankly, everyone who grew up visiting the Omniplex hates.  However, the museum still features the same great interactive science experiments and displays, the planetarium, the special displays, and more. The lower level of the museum is filled with great interactive science lessons.  Kids can learn how the earth rotates by watching the huge pendulum slowly knock blocks over as the day progresses.  In another area, they can talk into a microphone to learn about how sound travels.  A giant periscope lets museum visitors check out what’s going on around the area, even letting them look over into the neighboring Oklahoma City Zoo.  One of my personal favorites is the mirror maze.  I loved wandering through it as a kid and seeing all those reflections of myself.

The Paseo Arts District

One of my favorite parts of Oklahoma City is the Paseo Arts District.  It’s a really neat little cultural area full of fun shops and restaurants.  But you could say that about a number of places.  What makes the Paseo different?  It’s difficult to put it into words.  Part of it includes the events, workshops, and classes the Paseo offers.  Part of it is the people themselves.  And part of it is just the experience.
